Where the Way of Saint James passes, it is located on a small plain on the left bank of the river Valcarce in the region of El Bierzo. Once known as TRAVADELO, it was under the jurisdiction of the Castle of Sarracín de Vega de Valcarce. Its origins date back to Roman times and its gold mines in the area. It was repopulated by the bishop Gelmirez and in the 16th century there was a chapel dedicated to Saint Lazarus, next to it would probably be located a hospital for pilgrims, but nothing remains of both. Trabadelo is the capital of the municipality which, together with eight other villages around it, gives it its name.
The parish church of San Nicolás de Trabadelo keeps, from medieval times of the 13th or 14th centuries, a small image of a Virgin and Child, is a very small carving but very venerated. At the exit of the village there is a chapel dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, it is a simple construction that shows ara and altar. Around Trabadelo there are several routes and walks that bring you closer to places with an interesting history and scenic beauty. Also if it is hot the visitor can take a refreshing bath in its coquettish fluvial beach.
Trabadelo celebrates festivities in honour of San Tirso, who is the lawyer of the bones, on 28 January and San Nicolás is celebrated on 7 December.
In the hermitage of Fombasallá, that is located in the zone of the Ancares belonging to the municipal term, a pilgrimage is celebrated the 15 of August that departing from Trabadelo passes by Pradela and Sotelo and enjoying an idyllic landscape arrives at this hermitage where the celebration, with its ludic character joined to the religious one, is guaranteed.
At the exit of Trabadelo there is an old bridge over the Tegeira stream, which preserves part of its primitive foundation. This stream is also known as the Laredo river, perhaps in memory of the old town that, with that name, was located here in the 17th century.
Four products that stand out for their quality, such as reinette apple, botillo, cecina and pear, which form part of the corresponding designation of origin, are produced in the municipality of Trabadelo.
The N-VI road is the main access road to Trabadelo, following the A-6 we will find the detour towards the town in the section that runs between Villafranca del Bierzo and Pedrafita do Cebreiro.
Trabadelo has a bus service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays that covers the route El Castro-Ponferrada. For further information the telephone number is 900 204 020.
